How To Tell If A Silk Dress Is Real Silk

On the stage of clothing splendor, silk has always occupied a prominent position with its natural elegance and brilliance. However, in the market, real silk is often mixed with chemical fiber imitations, making it difficult to distinguish the real from the fake. How to make the "silk" secret of a silk dress invisible? You may wish to follow the following path and take a closer look:

Step 1: Touch

The most direct confession of silk is its touch. Gently touch the skirt, silk conveys warmth, softness and rich delicacy, as if touching baby skin. It is not cold and hard, nor is it slippery like plastic - that is the superficial texture often found in chemical fibers. Silk has a natural drape. When you crumple it and unfold it, it will leave soft wrinkles, but it will not form stubborn hard marks like plastic. It will return to its original state with a little tidying. This subtle touch is difficult for any imitation to achieve.

Step 2: Visual

The luster of silk is the implicit splendor given by nature. Under the light, the surface of silk will flow with soft and full pearlescent light, as if it is naturally radiating from the inside out, with warm and layered color. This is completely different from the dazzling, flat and cheap "thief light" of cheap chemical fiber. Carefully examine the texture and edge of the fabric. Silk is usually finely woven, with clear silk threads at the edge; while chemical fiber fabrics may appear to have a stiff texture, and sometimes even traces of melting can be seen at the edge.

Step 3: Listening - "Silk" language between subtle friction

Silk has its own unique "language". When you gently rub or rub two pieces of silk fabric, you will hear a clear and slightly astringent "rustling" sound or "silk sound". This sound comes from the special friction characteristics between silk protein fibers, which is a natural rhythm that chemical fiber cannot imitate. The sound of chemical fiber friction is usually more dull or sharp, lacking this unique texture.

Step 4: Burning - the ultimate means of careful verification (use with caution)

This is the most decisive method, but it requires extreme caution. Carefully extract a few fibers from the lining or seam of the skirt (make sure it does not affect the appearance). Grasp them with tweezers and light them in a ventilated place to observe:

Silk: Burns slowly, accompanied by the unique smell of burning protein (similar to the smell of burning feathers or hair). After the flame is extinguished, crisp, black ash that breaks easily with a twist is left.

Synthetic fiber (such as polyester): When burning, it curls and melts quickly, drips molten material, and is accompanied by the pungent smell of burning plastic. After extinguishing, it forms hard black or brown balls that are not easy to twist.

Step 5: Insight into details

The quality of a dress is often revealed in the details:
Lining and seams: Look at the lining and seams of the skirt. A real silk dress should still be made of silk, even if the lining may use other fabrics. Synthetic fiber imitations often reveal their flaws in hidden places. Check whether the seams are neat and firm, and whether the stitches are even.
Watermark test (small area): Drop a drop of water in an inconspicuous place. Silk absorbs water well, and water marks will spread and penetrate quickly, and may leave water marks after drying (so choose the location carefully). Synthetic fibers absorb water poorly, and water drops often stay on the surface in beads and are not easy to penetrate.
