Advantages of Cashmere Fabric

Cashmere possesses many desirable qualities, earning it a place in the premium suiting market:

Unique Comfort and Warmth: Cashmere fibers are very fine, hollow and very light-weight yet provide much more warmth than wool. This allows cashmere suits to be advantageous for high-end businessmen in fall and winter, giving them warmth and softness, but without the itchiness and of wool-but styling, of course, that it compensates.

Distinct luxurious texture: Cashmere fabric has a soft lustrous appearance and elegant refined handfeel that conveys luxurious comfort in quiet and sophisticated fashion. Cashmere lays beautifully and has great drape, creating clean flowing silhouettes, that it is the perfect fabric for luxurious elegant relaxed "soft-structured" suits - especially for those who appreciate and need the highest level of comfort and quality.

Limitations and Challenges of Cashmere Fabric

However, from the perspective of traditional suit-making and commercial production, cashmere also has some shortcomings that cannot be ignored:

Absence of Structural Support and Shape Memory: The defining characteristic of a classic suit is its upright and structured silhouette that relies on the fabric for being somewhat stiff and resistant. Cashmere fibers are too soft and consequently, fabrics made with it cannot mirror high-count worsted wool, in terms of sturdiness and durability. When elongated, pure cashmere suits stretch and lose their shape, making it difficult to keep sharp shoulders and crisp trouser lines, which instead push them towards a style of business that would be more casual or rely on comfort instead.

Restricted Durability and Wrinkle Resilience: Suits are functional garments with the consideration of being worn regularly and allowing some activity. In comparison to wool, cashmere is not as durable or wrinkle-resistant and will pill/crease much easier. In the business world where looking tidy and pressed is essential to each day being successful, this can have real practical implications.

Expensive and Manufacturing Complexity: Cashmere is a very expensive raw material, at least several times more than a merino wool raw material, and even up to 10 times more expensive. The complexity is compounded by the softness of the fibers requiring very skilled craftsmanship at each step of the process: spinning, weaving, cutting , and sewing. This increases both the complexity of manufacturing and the chance of defects. These costs can only be passed onto consumers, which makes pure cashmere suits extremely expensive with limited appeal to a niche market.
