What can I wear with a silk skirt?

info-1-1

1. Tops: Fabric Harmony Is the Key

Delicate and sensitive underwear: A silk or fine spun mulberry silk camisole is a perfect companion piece to a satin slip skirt. Both fabric types are of a similar construction and delicacy: delicate, smooth, body skimming, comfortable, and designed for minimal friction. If you go with a better quality knit camisole (modal), it should be smooth. However, if you are wearing a chunky-knit pullover, or have a cotton-linen blend garment with a heavier textured material, it's likely it will be abrasive to delicate silk.

Clean and crisp outerwear: The softness of silk benefits from a structured contrasting option. When opting for the crispiest, sharpest, professional outerwear, a well-fitting blazer is the first option. Look for maximum structure with shoulder seams; in spring and summer aim for lightweight linen or linen blends for a crisp serious feel, in the fall and winter wool or cashmere blends will also retain structure. Structured denim jackets and leather biker jackets (lambskin is a better choice due to its softness) offer more structure and contrast that will be fashionable. In contrast, do not wear references that are really soft or bulky, aka too soft knit cardigans as these can muddle the silhouette and detract from overall sharpeness.

Lightweight and delicate cardigan: If you would like a softer, more elegant look, one made from silk, chiffon, or a fine knit is perfect. A light, breathable cardigan won't overwhelm the shine of a silk skirt, and the floaty stuff will also give the effect of layers in an elegant, graceful way. Go for a V-neck, or wear it closed, to elongate your neckline nicely!

2. Bottoms and Shoes: Extension of Lines and Style

Pants (layering): When it's slightly cool, consider layering a long silk slip dress or skirt over tailored straight or slightly flared pants (either made of suiting fabric or acetate with good drape). If you only leave the pant legs and shoes showing, you can create a very modern, forward-looking outfit. The key here, again, is to make sure the skirt is sufficiently loosely cut and that the pants are simple and smooth so there is no bulk.

Footwear: Shoes are an essential component to your whole look.

Delicate and elegant: Pointed-toe stilettos (in nude, black or metallic), minimalist strappy sandals or elegant Mary Jane shoes to accentuate the beautiful silk fabric.

Effortless and cool: Loafers, classic ballet flats or white sneaker (with a more casual style and a skirt) will lessen the formal vibe, while still looking beautiful.

Super bold and expressive: Short boots with lots of personality, such as Chelsea boots, square-toe ankle boots; chunky sandal create a really avant-garde look and a great contrast.

What to avoid: Definitely avoid overly bulky shoes- such as, heavy duty hiking boots, clunky sneakers (on the overly street style!). Also avoid shoes that do not echo the sophistication of the silk bottom!

3. Accessories: The Finishing Touch Requires Restraint

Jewelry: The beauty of silk, daresay I say it, serves as one magnificent "canvas", until it is summarily finished off with any add-ons - jewelry items. All manner of pearls (i.e., earrings or necklaces) are obvious options you can conclude with silk clothing. Lightweight, functional gold or silver necklace chains, with either of two-dimensional geometric earring sets, always will be a safe bet. Avoid big, ornately detailed plastic jewelry items, cheap looking items, or items distinct from the fashion choice of silk. The beauty of silk clothing can be easily bettered by the presence of cheaply mentioned big plastic jewelry items or baubles - confusion is a defining quality of badly chosen accessories.

Belts: If the silk dress or long skirt is lacking a naturally occurring defined waistline, than even a slim belt styled in leather, satin, or metal chain will completely change the proportions and define the waist without showing additional displeasing fullness (maintaining your silk's dignity). Avoid belts that are excessive width. Avoid belts with excessive detail.

Bags: Always choose high quality and simple bags (i.e., look and see!). Clutches, small chain bags, and structured shoulder bags display silk well. Fabrics like suede, calfskin, and satin supplement silk. Avoid large practical bags, and masses of personal "stuff" like a large tote. Avoid home made, No! and very casual personal bags, such as canvas bags.

4. Color and Pattern: The Art of Harmony and Contrast

Monochromatic or analogous colors: This is the safest option, and the most sophisticated. Nothing looks better, and more cohesive than similar colors and textures, like a blush satin skirt with a grey-pink knitted cardigan.

Classic neutrals: Classic colors black, white, grey, beige and navy are ideal companions to silk skirts. You can't go wrong combining a black blazer with a white silk slip dress.

High-saturation color contrasts: If you have the confidence to use colors together, you can try some high-saturation contrasts, like a royal blue silk skirt paired with bright red jacket. If you think you can make it work, do it. Just be aware of color proportion and overall balance.

Matching prints: A solid colour silk skirt can ground any printed top. When looking for printed tops look for something that has a matching colour from one of the skirt colours, or, if you would like to keep it really simple, go for something subtle including stripes and polka dots. If the skirt is a printed skirt, you would want to opt for a solid top, and as with matching skirts, use a colour that is in one of the skirt's accent colours.
